My initial iPad thoughts

Ok so after a day to play with it, this thing IS seriously addictive, useful, and convenient. Last night I got caught up with some episodes of Flash Froward while laying in bed. Perfect screen size for your lap. Some of the apps for iPhone look perfectly fine at the 2X setting for iPad. Considering what I convert I am for Tweetdeck, I found I like the Twitterific iPad app much more. I may need to pay for the upgrade to get multiple accounts. Will still stick with Tweetdeck on the computer.

For apps like Facebook for iPhone I kept on asking myself when will they make an iPad version? When all along I should have been thinking about just accessing Facebook from the Safari browser. This new type of thinking will take some getting used to. On the iPhone I rely so much on apps that make the experience much richer than the browser on iPhone is. But with the larger screen of the iPad, it eliminates that need.

The keyboard is impossible to touch type with as it’s a weird size. Too big to one hand type too small to seriously type with. The touch screen on the keyboard is so sensitive that I find myself errantly hitting the number or symbol keys. The lack of multitasking and background widgets is annoying ( would love to have tweet deck running in the background) and even though I agree with HTML5 push, lack of flash does lessen the browser experience. I wish there was an iChat app. The lack of camera is a disappointment but even a quick IM app would have been nice. Still: besides my video editing and work activity: Photoshop, HTML, <gasp>PowerPoint </gasp> I will probably just use my iPad for everything else.

It will not replace my iPhone or my MacBook pro. It does nestle perfectly in-between. It will be more of a content consumption device for me. Getting over 10 hours of battery in one charge while doing heavy surfing and video.

I wish I had more control over where icons were placed in the screen. I wish there was tabbed browsing. I wish I could print directly from the iPad to a networked printer.

The fact that the interface is identical to the iPhone/Touch is familiar and nice and confusing at the same time. As I try to find its best fit into my daily life, I toggle betweent the likes and dislikes of my iPhone and my MacBook Pro and in some cases the iPad is better than both and in others worse than one.

I imagine i’m going to be taking all my notes in meetings with this thing moving forward. My iPad and Evernote over Wifi is all I really need for that. I also imagine this will be the only thing I need while blogging from conferences, or on the plane. This new apple chip is super zippy.

Me likey.
